Yellowstone Supervolcano Hit by a Swarm of More Than 400 Earthquakes in One Week

Yellowstone supervolcano has been hit by a series of earthquakes, with more 400 recorded since June 12. The latest was recorded on Monday, June 19, with a magnitude 3 earthquake striking 8.6 miles north northeast of West Yellowstone, Montana.

The swarm began last week, and on June 15 saw a magnitude 4.5 earthquake take place in Yellowstone National Park. “The epicenter of the shock was located in Yellowstone National Park, eight miles north-northeast of the town of West Yellowstone, Montana,” scientists from the University of Utah, which monitors Yellowstone Volcano, said in a statement.

“The earthquake was [reportedly] felt in the towns of West Yellowstone and Gardiner, Montana, in Yellowstone National Park, and elsewhere in the surrounding region.”

This earthquake was the largest to have hit Yellowstone since March 30, 2014, when a magnitude 4.8 earthquake was recorded 18 miles to the east, near the Norris Geyser Basin.

“[The 4.5] earthquake is part of an energetic sequence of earthquakes in the same area that began on June 12,” the statement continued. “This sequence has included approximately thirty earthquakes of magnitude 2 and larger and four earthquakes of magnitude 3 and larger, including today’s magnitude 4.5 event.” For more on this supervolcano click here

If you live in California then you’ve heard the saying quake country. We’ve all experienced a major quake in our life time. I remember the one quake that scared the life out of me.

Buildings collapsed as a result of the earthquake

It was January 17, 1994 the time was 4:30 on Martin Luther King Jr day, no school or work that day, saved thousands of lives in my opinion. Just imagine all those people that would have been on the freeways that collapsed! I didn’t sleep for days because I was scared that there would be another earthquake but stronger. 

According to seismologist Tom Rockwell “A powerful quake in the mid-to-upper 6s could cause liquefaction around San Diego and Mission bays and locally in Mission Valley, and cause the land to be offset across the fault, which would damage buildings.” The Rose Canyon fault stretches almost 40 miles, from San Diego bay in the south before veering offshore near La Jolla and reaching as far north as Oceanside.

Scientists suggest forecasting volcanic eruptions by tracking deep-focus earthquakes

Researchers analyzed the data taken from seismographs of that region collected in 2011 and 2012 with a special focus being placed on the long-period earthquakes

MOSCOW, May 17. /TASS/. Russian scientists have proven that a rise in earthquake activity at depths of around 30 km, can precede volcanic eruptions on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The study’s results have been recently published in the scientific journal Nature GeoScience.

“Our research confirms that long-period earthquakes are connected to the transfer of fluids below ground and might be utilized as reliable evidence of the activation of deep parts of the magma system before the beginning of a volcanic eruption,” the article.
